Library opening hours

Have your say on proposed changes

East Sussex County Council has to make savings of more than £70 million by March 2019. This includes a savings target of £2million in the library service. We need to make some difficult decisions to achieve this.

We are proposing to reduce opening hours across our 24 libraries by around 25% on average, to save around £500,000 a year. We would like to hear your views about the following draft proposals:

  • All libraries will be open only between the hours of 10am and 5pm
  • Libraries that currently open later than 5.30pm would retain one evening opening until 6pm
  • Libraries that open on a Saturday will continue to do so

No changes would be made to the E-library service, which allows library members to access e-books and e-audiobooks and a range of free online reference material 24 hours a day. Members and non-members will still be able to make enquiries online or by phone.

Full details about the proposals for each library are on our consultation page. You can give your views about library opening hours until 3 April 2016.

What happens next

These proposals are part of a wider review of the library service looking at the way services are provided, including staffing levels and stock funds.

Following this consultation updated proposals will be presented to Cabinet in summer 2016. If approved, the reduction in opening hours would take effect in autumn 2016.
